How to Make Attar at Home (Alcohol-Free Perfume Oil)

By Abdul Aziz, founder of Oud Al Aziz, Hyderabad. Last updated 28 October 2026.

The simplest attar is a good fragrance oil poured straight into a 12ml roll-on. To make it softer or cheaper, mix 1 part oil with 1 part carrier such as DPG or IPM. To make your own blend, combine 2 or 3 oils, for example rose, oud and musk, and let it rest for a week.

Three ways to make attar

Method Recipe for 12ml Result
Neat oil 12ml of one oil Strongest, longest lasting
Diluted 6ml oil + 6ml DPG or IPM Softer, half the cost
Mukhallat (blend) 6ml rose + 3ml oud + 3ml musk Your own signature scent

Step by step: a rose oud mukhallat

  1. Use a clean, completely dry glass bottle.
  2. Add 6ml of Indian Rose oil.
  3. Add 3ml of Tom Ford Oud Wood (inspired) oil, or Agarwood (Oud) Accord for a smokier oud.
  4. Add 3ml of White Musk to soften and hold the blend.
  5. Close, shake gently, and leave it in a dark cupboard for 7 days.
  6. Smell it on skin. Add a little more of any note you want stronger, then bottle it.

Write down every recipe, with the drops or millilitres, so you can make the same attar again.

What it costs

At 100ml prices, the rose oud mukhallat above costs roughly Rs 400 to Rs 450 in oil for a 12ml bottle. Buying the oils by the kilogram brings that down by about half.

Safety

  • Patch test new blends on your inner arm for 24 hours.
  • Don't use aroma chemicals or essential oils on skin undiluted.
  • Keep oils away from heat, sunlight and children.
