How to Make Perfume at Home in Pakistan, Step by Step

By Abdul Aziz, founder of Oud Al Aziz, Hyderabad. Last updated 22 October 2026.

To make perfume at home, mix fragrance oil with perfumer's alcohol, about 20ml of oil to 80ml of alcohol for a long-lasting eau de parfum. Let it rest in a closed glass bottle for 2 to 4 weeks, then filter and bottle it. For an alcohol-free attar, use the oil on its own or dilute it with a carrier such as DPG or IPM.

What you need

Item What it does Where to get it
Fragrance oil The scent itself Wholesale perfume oils, 100ml from Rs 1,500
Perfumer's alcohol or perfume base Carries the scent and makes it sprayable Premixed perfume base, Rs 1,300 per litre
Fixative (optional) Helps the scent last longer Iso E Super or Ambroxan
Carrier oil (for attar) Dilutes oil for roll-ons and attars DPG or IPM
Glass bottles, dropper, measuring cylinder Mixing and storing Any bottle supplier
Coffee filter paper Removes cloudiness Any supermarket

How much oil to use

Type Fragrance oil Alcohol or base How long it lasts
Eau de parfum (EDP) 15% to 25% 75% to 85% 6 to 8 hours
Eau de toilette (EDT) 8% to 15% 85% to 92% 3 to 5 hours
Body mist 3% to 5% 95% to 97% 1 to 3 hours
Attar (alcohol-free) 100%, or 30% to 50% in a carrier None 8 hours or more

Start with 20% for your first EDP. In 100ml, that is 20ml of fragrance oil and 80ml of perfume base.

Step by step: a 100ml EDP

  1. Clean and fully dry a 100ml glass bottle. Water makes perfume cloudy.
  2. Measure 20ml of fragrance oil into the bottle.
  3. Optional: add 1ml to 2ml of a fixative such as Iso E Super for extra lasting power.
  4. Add 78ml to 80ml of perfume base slowly, then close the bottle and shake gently for a minute.
  5. Store it in a dark cupboard for 2 to 4 weeks and shake it every few days. This rest, called maceration, lets the scent blend and soften.
  6. If it looks cloudy, chill it in the fridge for a few hours and pour it through coffee filter paper.
  7. Pour into spray bottles and label each one with the date.

What it costs

A 100ml EDP made with a mid-range oil costs roughly Rs 300 to Rs 700 in oil and Rs 130 in perfume base, before bottles. That is why many people in Pakistan start a small perfume business this way. If you plan to sell, read how to check perfume oil quality before buying in bulk.

How to make attar instead

For an alcohol-free attar, fill a 12ml roll-on with the fragrance oil as it is. If the oil is very strong or expensive, mix 1 part oil with 1 part DPG or IPM. Attars need no ageing, but they smell smoother after a week.

Safety tips

  • Alcohol is flammable. Mix away from stoves, flames and cigarettes.
  • Never put aroma chemicals or essential oils on skin undiluted.
