Attar vs Perfume Oil vs EDP: What Is the Difference?

By Abdul Aziz, founder of Oud Al Aziz, Hyderabad. Last updated 15 October 2026.

Attar is a traditional, alcohol-free fragrance oil. Perfume oil is a modern fragrance blend in an oil base, also without alcohol. An EDP (eau de parfum) is a spray in which the fragrance is dissolved in alcohol. Oils sit close to the skin and last long, while EDP sprays project further and are easier to apply.

What is attar?

Attar (also written ittar or itr) comes from the Arabic word for fragrance. It was traditionally made by distilling flowers, herbs or woods and capturing the scent in a base oil such as sandalwood. Today the word is used for any alcohol-free fragrance oil sold in small bottles. Attar is part of everyday life in Pakistan, especially for Jumma, Eid and weddings.

What is perfume oil?

Perfume oil is the modern name for the same idea: a fragrance blend in an oil base instead of alcohol. In Pakistan, people often search "perfume oil" when they mean attar. The difference is mostly the style of scent. Attars lean traditional (oud, musk, rose), while perfume oils often copy modern designer scents.

What is EDP?

EDP stands for eau de parfum, a spray that usually contains 15 to 20 percent fragrance concentrate, with the rest mostly alcohol. Weaker sprays are called EDT (eau de toilette, about 5 to 15 percent) and EDC (eau de cologne, about 2 to 4 percent). The alcohol evaporates quickly after spraying and carries the scent into the air, which is why sprays project further than oils.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose attar if you want an alcohol-free scent for prayer, a long-lasting scent that stays close, or value for money.
  • Choose EDP if you want a scent that others notice from a distance, quick to apply, for events and evenings.
  • Choose both for the longest wear: dab the attar first, then spray the matching EDP over it.

Mostly yes. Both are alcohol-free fragrance oils. Attar usually means a traditional scent such as oud, musk or rose, while perfume oil often means a modern blend.

Attar usually lasts longer on skin because oil evaporates slowly. Our attars last 6 to 14 hours and our EDPs 5 to 10 hours.
